Water heater pressure or non-pressure – differences and advantages, disadvantages

An electric water heater is designed to heat water to the desired temperature and keep it at that temperature for an extended period. The primary component of all these devices is a heating element enclosed in a water container. While gas boilers utilize a gas burner as the heating element, electric heaters rely on a metal heating element. To identify the most suitable electric water heater, one must establish its specific requirements and distinguish them from other models.

A flow-through electric water heater possesses the subsequent characteristics:

  • Requires a small area for installation.
  • The small amount of water quickly reaches the desired temperature.
  • The heating rate is dependent on the power of the heating elements (up to 30 kW).
  • The heating element is sensitive to airlocks.
  • Used exclusively for heating water during washing.

The structure of flow-through water heaters consists of the following components, which guarantee rapid water heating:

  • Durable external metal circuit.
  • Heating element for water heating.
  • Airlock sensor.
  • Temperature switch.
  • Inlet for cold water.
  • Outlet for hot water.

Although models may differ in additional features, the fundamental composition of elements remains constant for all variations.

It is possible to select an electric water heater for any apartment.

Flowing water heaters are categorized into pressurized and non-pressurized based on their operation principle.

Pressurized water heaters are built to be directly connected to the pipe, which means they are subject to the pressure of the water network regardless of whether the heater is in use or not. In this type of heater, the material and durability of the container where the water is heated are crucial.

Furthermore, pressure appliances are equipped with a safety system that consists of a fuse, a pressure reducer, and a check valve. These components ensure the smooth functioning of the water heater.

Unpressurized water heaters are designed to be independent from the water supply thanks to a shut-off valve. To allow water to flow through the system, a regular faucet needs to be installed. However, if the water heater is a storage type, a special faucet is necessary. These types of water heaters typically do not create high pressure, which means that plastic tanks can be used. One of the advantages of plastic tanks is that they are relatively cheap and not prone to corrosion. Additionally, they are good at retaining heat. On the downside, they have a limited volume, usually up to 30 liters.

When choosing heaters, it is important to compare them based on several characteristics. Initially, consider the overall dimensions of the installation location. Choose several water heater samples, either pressure or non-pressure. At the same time, ensure that each sample can be easily connected to the electrical and water distribution network. It should also be easily accessible for maintenance and control. Next, select the heater that will meet the required performance under specific conditions. The demand depends on the number of households and the expected water usage for various activities (hand washing: 3 liters per minute; dish washing: 5 liters per minute; bathing: 8 liters per minute).

It is important to consider that modern European models of heaters consume approximately the same amount of electricity when heating 1 liter of water. Therefore, this characteristic will be similar among all selected samples. The price may vary only if different materials are used in the construction of the tank and heating element, assuming that all heaters have safety features. Once multiple samples with the same characteristics have been chosen, the matter of design must be addressed.

The appearance of the selected electric flow water heaters should complement the interior of the room. The durability of the heater depends on the material used to construct the tank, the design of the heaters (dry or wet), and the heating element control system (mechanical or electronic).

An ideal location for installing the water heater

The water heater’s compact design allows it to be easily installed in tight spaces in a modern apartment. These heaters are known as storage heaters or tank heaters. The size and shape can be chosen based on the specific dimensions of the room in the apartment. The heater includes a tank with a capacity of 65-100 liters. The heating element (TENS) raises the water temperature to a preset 70 degrees using a rheostat. By combining hot water with cold water, we can achieve a comfortable mix of 30 degrees. The cold water enters the tank through the pipes of the internal domestic water supply, which can come from either a deep well pump or the city water supply.

The primary operating principle of a pressurized flow water heater is to provide continuous hot water at a specific temperature (such as in a shower cabin) without any limitations in time. For example, if you choose a heater with a flow rate of 8 liters per minute and set the temperature regulator to 40 degrees, your whole family can shower in the cabin without needing to adjust water or electricity. The automation system will handle all the necessary processes.

When selecting a water heater, there are some important factors to consider:

  • Name and price
  • Calculated load (including shower and faucet usage)
  • Country of manufacturer and warranty period
  • Possibility of using a water filter
  • Material of the heating element and flow rate in liters per minute
  • Regulation of temperature, heating power, and power consumption
  • The choice of installation and pipe placement (either horizontally or vertically).
  • Physical dimensions and weight. Inlet pressure. Required voltage (220 V) and spigot diameter.

A water heater is located next to the shower cubicle.

When it comes to determining whether a pressurized or non-pressurized water heater is easier to use, the ideal choice is the pressurized one. To start it, you simply need to open the hot water faucet, adjust the temperature regulator to 40 degrees (for taking a shower), and start utilizing it. There’s no need to turn on the electricity as it’s already connected. The water tank is always filled and maintains the operating pressure of the network. All adjustments are done automatically. If there’s a need for simultaneous usage of two or more points (such as showering and dishwashing) while maintaining a constant temperature, a pressurized water heater is the optimal choice, especially for larger families.

The choice of an electric flow heater depends on the total amount of hot water flow per minute. If the necessary conditions for operating a pressure heater are not available, a pressureless flow heater should be used instead. Opting for a non-pressure water heater gives us a device that is easy to operate, but it requires a few additional steps. We start by turning on the cold water tap and filling the tank with 100 liters of water. Then we turn on the electrical network and set the temperature of the hot water to 70 degrees. Next, we activate the heating elements and wait for some time. The thermostat should eventually turn off the water heating. At this point, we can open the tap and use the hot water (diluting it with cold water if necessary). After completing our tasks, we can reverse these operations to turn off the flow heater.

When comparing the qualities of a pressure flow heater and a non-pressure flow heater, it can be challenging to determine which one is better. The differences between them are relatively small.

A pressureless EFH system is installed in the bathroom.

If the water supply has weak and unstable pressure, frequent disconnections, and dirty water, it is not advisable to use a pressure heater.

It is recommended to use a non-pressure flow heater with dry heating elements when supplying water from local sources to the insulated storage tank in the attic.

If you have all the necessary conditions and budget constraints, you can opt for a pressure flow heater (6 kW, 3 l/min) priced at 3.5 thousand rubles.

Budget version of a pressure flow heater

This level of power enables you to eliminate the need for centralized hot water and rely solely on the supply of cold water. It is crucial to ground or neutralize the heater. The installation of a disconnecting protective device for the electrical network is a requirement. For best results, it is recommended to have a professional electrician carry out the installation of the water heater, ensuring full compliance with safety regulations.
