The second life of a mixer – what you can make from an old mixer

It’s not always the case that we immediately discard things, as many individuals have irons, hair dryers, and other household appliances stashed away. It’s entirely possible to stumble upon an old mixer, perhaps even one that still functions, which was replaced by a newer, more modern model. It’s fortunate that it hasn’t been disposed of yet, as we’ve discovered some suggestions on how you can repurpose an old mixer for your household.

How to make a table-top power drill out of a mixer?

To create a bolt cutter specifically for sharpening knives or other items, one can utilize a functioning mixer. This method requires the use of a section of the mixer body that incorporates a motor. Ideally, a stationary tool with a detachable portable bulb is recommended. The process of conversion can be executed as follows.

1. Prepare the mixer body and ensure that it is in working condition, while also verifying the functionality of its speed modes. If necessary, repair the electrical component of the equipment.
2. To construct the sharpening tool, a regular disc of a 125 millimeter diameter from a Bulgarian drill will suffice.

In the case that the mixer was initially designed to operate at multiple speeds, it is recommended that all sharpening and polishing tasks are carried out at the maximum speed setting. This approach will yield greater efficiency and productivity.

Figure 3 gives us an example of how a mixer can find a second life as a sharpening tool.

Connecting the equipment to the pedal control

Manually selecting and controlling the speed of new equipment can sometimes be inconvenient. One way to solve this issue is by adding a foot pedal to the grinding machine:

• First, disassemble the housing of the machine.
• Next, disconnect the electronic control.
• Then, connect the motor directly and attach it to the foot pedal.

However, it is important to note that not all models are compatible with this modification. Choosing the wrong equipment can result in motor overheating and failure, or even a short circuit. To avoid these issues, it is recommended to calculate the required power for the connection. Each product has a label with the necessary parameters.

To determine the optimal pedal load current, divide the power of the mixer motor by the mains voltage. In our case:

• The current for a 700 watt / 220 volt device is equivalent to 3 amperes.

If the pedal has a factory rated load current that exceeds 3 amperes, this type of connection is very practical.

This device is perfect for sharpening knives used in households, meat grinder knives, and other household tools. It can also be used for polishing wooden, plastic, or metal items.

Figure 4 demonstrates how the foot pedal motor control allows you to have your hands free.

Boro-machine from a working old mixer

The engine of an ancient blender possesses impressive power and has proven its reliability over time. You have the opportunity to employ your own hands in a beneficial manner by repurposing this household appliance, as long as you have an extra motor from a portable blender, two cans (one from a coffee container and one from a soda can, with the former having a slightly larger diameter), and a small piece of ornamental leather.

The procedure for transforming these materials into a functional boro-machine is outlined below.

1. Take apart the mixer and remove the 220 volt motor.
2. Move the fan as close as possible to the motor by removing any unnecessary elements that are attached to the fan base and shaft housing. These elements do not serve any functional purpose for the future product. Then, attach the fan to the end of the shaft leg.
3. Afterwards, cut off the top portion of the air freshener can up to where it starts to narrow.
4. The perfectly fitting cut top should be securely attached to the opening of the second coffee can. To ensure reliability, it can be fastened with cold welding and left to fully harden. Prior to this, small holes should be made about 2-3 mm from the edge of the circle to allow for additional air exchange during fan operation.
5. After the welding has fully solidified, an empty bearing of similar size should be inserted into the remaining hole to facilitate future attachment of the boron. The hole should then be carefully pressed with a hammer. Finally, all voids should be sealed from the inside with epoxy resin.
6. A rectangular hole should be cut in the can to allow for the control output to be connected externally. The motor should then be inserted into the housing and secured on a previously welded metal frame or an improvised one.
7. To provide additional air exchange, a metal sink drain with holes can be used to cover the bottom. It is recommended to weld it using liquid welding.
8. Once the equipment is assembled, the body can be adorned with a leather flap.

To complete the finished burr, a washer should be placed on the shaft attachment or any type of fastener can be screwed in. By putting together this universal device with zero investment, you now have the ability to create amazing masterpieces right at home.

There are numerous possibilities to utilize the drill in your own home, as shown in Figure 6.

Making interesting objects from a flask

If your stationary mixer has a flask in good condition without any cracks, you can transform it into a unique candle holder that will add warmth and coziness to your winter evenings. There are various creative ways you can make use of it:

• Adorn the outer surface with wine corks, fill it with coffee beans, and place a decorative candle inside.

When it comes to decoration, there are numerous choices available. It’s important to select one that complements the room’s style.

Special paints can be employed for decorating the exterior.

Disassembling a mixer

If the mixer is no longer functioning and we have already considered a purpose for the flask, there’s no need to rush and discard the housing with the motor. Instead, we can dismantle it and salvage useful components for future remodeling. The process of disassembly can be carried out as follows:

1. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the connecting screws.
2. Visually examine the cause of the engine malfunction to determine which internal parts or assemblies may be useful later.
3. After disassembling the non-functional motor, focus on the following assemblies and elements:
4. The mode switch.
5. The indicator light.
6. The motor. If disassembled, the rotor and stator can be used later.
7. The wires.
8. The coil with copper wiring.
9. The mains wire.
10. Lastly, a classic mixer can also be repurposed as spare components for future renovations.

Therefore, in conclusion, a tried and true mixer has the potential to serve as valuable spare parts in upcoming remodels.

Creating things with your own hands is not just about saving money, it’s also an expression of creativity. It’s much more satisfying to use a tool that you’ve put your heart into making. Don’t rush to discard old things, as you can always find a way to repurpose them and give a new lease of life to your beloved equipment.
