Replacing jets on gas stoves at home

Sunsky-online WWItalojewerly WW

The jets are an essential component of a gas stove that plays a crucial role in its proper functioning. These jets need to be replaced only on rare occasions, specifically when there is a transition from using blue fuel from a stationary gas source to the use of liquefied fuel from cylinders. Changing the jets in a gas stove can be done manually, but it requires a thorough understanding of the dismantling process and all its intricacies.

The principle of operation of the nozzle

The gas supply system is considered the traditional solution for kitchen stoves. It consists of a burner, transportation channels, shut-off valves, and the burner itself. Despite the different models and prices, these components remain unchanged. The shut-off valve and the burner are responsible for the volume and pressure of the gas supplied. This combination is often referred to as a jig and nozzle, where the shut-off valve is part of the burner. Propane (in cylinders) and natural gas (in pipelines) can both be used as fuel.

To ensure proper functioning of the equipment, precise proportions of gas supply are necessary. This means that the fuel must be delivered at a specific rate and in equal proportions. This is where the injector in the system comes into play.

Furthermore, it is imperative to select injectors based on the fuel type. If, for instance, a component intended for propane is utilized in a system that runs on methane, it will produce smoke and release hazardous substances. To ensure the necessary gas volume and pressure, a modifiable orifice is integrated into the nozzle. When it comes to newly manufactured stoves, the components are fine-tuned to achieve optimal and versatile settings. These settings are determined by taking into account the equipment’s power and the highest possible combustion rate of the fuel.

Features of the system

Gicleurs are essentially the same as regular bolts, with a hexagonal head and threads. What sets them apart is a small hole in the center. The size of the hole is determined by the type of gas, the stove’s power, and the fuel delivery system.

Gas stove gaskets

When it comes to gaskets for gas stoves, it’s important to consider the power ratings for different types of gas. Propane and methane have equal power ratings, but the openings for these gases vary. The opening for propane is slightly narrower, while for methane it is noticeably wider. Therefore, if you try to install natural fuel nozzles on a burner that is designed for bottled gas, you will encounter several issues.

Firstly, the tongues of the burner will be much longer than they should be, causing a specific noise and potentially affecting the performance of the stove. Additionally, the flame produced by the burner will turn orange, indicating an improper gas-air mixture. To address these issues, it is recommended to replace the gasket with an element that has a narrower nozzle.

Sets of jets

Most jets have a standard slot size of 7 mm. However, on larger industrial equipment or smaller plates, you may come across non-standard parts. The length of the nozzle also depends on the type of fuel. Nozzles that operate on liquefied gas are slightly longer than those used for natural gas. The recommended bore diameters for different fuel types can be found in the table below:

Most manufacturers equip their models with universal nozzles that can run on natural gas. However, models in the mid-price and premium segments often allow users to switch between fuel types (such as propane or natural gas) by simply changing the nozzle. If this option is not available, a set of jets can be purchased at specialized stores. These jets are typically made of brass, which can withstand temperature fluctuations and corrosion while being durable. During cooking, the jets themselves do not heat up significantly. Older equipment may have jets made of brass screwed into an aluminum base. When replacing these jets, it is important to be cautious not to damage the thread. The thread pitch can usually be determined easily even in the absence of documentation. Most stores carry jets with thread pitches of either 0.75 mm or 1.0 mm. Some non-standard variants may exist, but these are typically used for specific equipment and not for household purposes. Jets in models manufactured in 2009 and earlier often have a pitch of 1.0 mm, while modern equipment usually comes with jets with a pitch of 0.75 mm. To determine the pitch of a part, simply compare it to the old jets using a ruler. If the thread matches up with each millimeter on the ruler, then the pitch is 1.0 mm. If the existing jets fit differently, the pitch is 0.75 mm.

It is crucial to note that when transitioning from methane to propane, you will need to replace both the injectors and the gas reducer.

Possible nozzle faults

  • There are flames with a reddish-yellow hue;
  • The burner frequently goes out;
  • The intensity of the flame periodically changes;
  • The burner is difficult to ignite or does not ignite at all.

Replacement of the part is necessary only when the flame separates from the splitter and cannot be properly controlled by the fuel supply system. This issue is most commonly caused by a manufacturing defect in the nozzle. If this problem is observed on all burners, then it is likely that the regulator is faulty.

Maintenance of the jets

There is no need to remove the nozzles for cleaning in most popular models of well-known brands. All that is required is to remove the burners to gain access to the dirty parts. However, if the cooktop is of the closed type, it may be necessary to dismantle it.

To clean the nozzle, a regular needle or copper wire is sufficient. Insert the tool into the hole and rotate it. Once the needle reaches the bottom, turn on the gas and then remove it. This method allows the gas jet to push the dust and dirt out of the nozzle. Blowing out for two or three seconds is more than enough.

If there are issues with maintaining the stove on-site, or if the stove does not allow for on-site maintenance, it is necessary to fully remove the nozzle, clean it, rinse it, and dry it. The detailed procedure for doing so is often provided in the equipment’s operating instructions.

  • Nozzles can be removed using an 8 mm wrench (7 mm for propane).
  • Burner fasteners require a 14 mm wrench.
  • Pipe nuts can be loosened using a 17 mm wrench.

It’s important to note that the mounting process may vary for some specific stoves. In such cases, a wrench with an adjustable head diameter can be used as a versatile option.

Changing the nozzles

When working with gas appliances, it is crucial to exercise special caution and follow instructions meticulously. This is particularly true when it comes to applying physical force, as exerting excessive effort could potentially result in the need for extensive repairs to your gas stove.

Replacing the nozzles may seem like a relatively simple task, but if you lack experience in working with such equipment, it is advisable to seek assistance from a professional service technician.

The key to successfully repairing your gas stove on your own lies in strictly adhering to all safety requirements. To get started, let’s gather a basic set of tools. You will need a flathead screwdriver and a pair of box-end and socket (star-shaped) wrenches:

  • For jets – 8 mm (for liquefied gas – 7 mm)
  • 14 mm burner nuts;
  • 17 mm oven piping tip.

We have disconnected the gas supply to the stove and have prepared a table to store the various parts that have been removed so far. All the photos were taken during the disassembly of the Brest 300 stove, but the replacement of these parts will be similar for other products.

Stove burners

  1. The cooking panel contains standard devices, as shown in the picture. To access them, you will need to remove the grating.
  2. Now, carefully take out the diffusers and detach the burners from their sockets.
  3. In order to reach the jets, it is necessary to remove the cover of the burner table, which is secured with screws.
  4. Various models have different fasteners. In our case, we only needed to unscrew two screws, and then the cover was easily lifted.
  5. We observed two metal strips – traverses, each of which has mounted burner bodies with identical designs, with the only difference being the length of the aluminum pipe. At the end of this pipe, there is a nozzle where the blue fuel is supplied. The fuel then exits the nozzle through a hole at the end, and mixes with air before being delivered to the burner leg via the splitter. If the flame-spreader holes become clogged, the flame will not come out from all points, and it will be necessary to clean or blow out the holes.
  6. The burner body is firmly attached to the crossbeam and supports the entire structure vertically. Here, it is necessary to make a small digression and discuss special tools – there is a misconception among users about a unique set of tubular wrenches that can easily replace the jets on any model of gas stove. However, anyone, even without technical education, can immediately see that such a wrench cannot reach the nozzle due to the special structure of the design. The first photograph perfectly illustrates how the nozzle is secured to the pipeline in our case. Additionally, it shows other designs of gas burners found in more modern types of stoves, where the nozzles are screwed into the body from above, eliminating the need to disassemble the table. These variants are more expensive, but they are simpler when it comes to replacing the jets.
  7. To detach the nozzle, you need to locate a special fastener – a plate with a slit and a hole in the center, resembling a clothespin. Gently squeeze one side of the clamp, without applying too much force, to remove it from the socket. This will release the nozzle with the jets. Then, just press on the tube to remove it from the securing ring.
  8. Now you have the option to proceed with the replacement. There are two possibilities: you can remove the tips from all pipelines and unscrew the injectors on the table, or you can attempt to remove the injectors on the spot. The former is recommended, as the nozzles are so tightly stuck to the tip’s body that unscrewing them can be very challenging – sometimes requiring careful clamping in a locksmith’s vise. If you’re concerned about any confusion, all the lugs are appropriately labeled.
  9. When removing the tip, the O-ring remains inside, so when putting it back together, you must remove it and place it on the tube. The threads of the nozzle are not sealed – there is no technical need for this. The rings are also not lubricated, as the internal pressure of the gas main is much lower than that of water pipes.
  10. Now that the nozzle replacement on the table is complete, the assembly is done in the opposite order, but first, the jets in the oven need to be changed.

Nozzle in the oven

  1. Access the lower technical drawer of the stove and fully extend the oven door to its lowest position.
  2. The nozzle can be found behind the left wall of the oven within a designated compartment that houses the curved burner. To reach it, you must remove the bottom floor of the oven. There is a slot provided for this purpose, simply pull it towards you and it should come out smoothly. Set it aside.
  3. Take out the burner by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place. The burner is responsible for allowing gas to enter the oven through the opening on the left. Inside the burner, you will find the nozzle that needs to be replaced.
  4. Considering the possibility of the nozzle being firmly attached to the nozzle body during prolonged use, it is not advisable to forcibly remove it. If the thread is damaged, it will be necessary to purchase a new body.
  5. To disassemble the stove, remove the three screws that secure the left side wall of the plate, and then slide it off to the side.
  6. In order to remove the nozzle housing, it is necessary to unscrew the nut at the end of the pipeline using a 17 mm wrench. The unscrewing process goes smoothly.
  7. To detach the housing from the oven wall, it is required to loosen the two screws. To do this, the piping needs to be pulled slightly back and then the nozzle should be removed.
  8. The nozzle replacement is performed in a peaceful setting at the table – the nozzle is firmly stuck, so we had to apply a special lubricant and wait for a few minutes.

Assembly is conducted strictly in reverse, taking all necessary precautions.

These are all the intricacies of replacing nozzles in a gas stove. It is important to remember that only the appropriate nozzle should be used, based on the specific stove model – specialized sets of these small yet crucial components are available for sale.
