Rating of TVs

A straightforward and comprehensible aspiration – to purchase a household television, which is pleasing to the eye in all meanings of the term, swiftly transforms into a veritable marketing investigation.

Let’s attempt to distinguish the valuable information from the irrelevant, and ascertain what is truly significant: the bells and whistles in the shape of a set of innovations or the visual aesthetic that brings joy?

Modern technologies

One of the most significant revolutions in the TV industry has been the shift from large and bulky CRT TVs to sleek and slim LCD panels. Liquid crystals paved the way for this transformation, but they were soon overtaken by plasma screens. However, models with ionized gas screens quickly fell out of favor, and LED TVs became the preferred choice for consumers worldwide.

LCD or LED?

It can be confusing with all the abbreviations, and the Russian market only makes it worse by easily substituting concepts.

Currently, screens with the same liquid crystals are referred to as "LED screens": the main difference is that the outdated fluorescent backlight used in the first LCDs has been replaced with a more advanced LED backlight.

The diode array can be placed either on the edges (Edge LED) or along the back plane (Direct LED) of the screen. Each type of backlight has its own advantages and disadvantages, but Direct LED is considered to provide a more even distribution of light.

LED, OLED or QLED?

Despite their numerous benefits, LED televisions have one major drawback: they are unable to accurately reproduce the color black. It is simply not possible to completely darken all of the pixels in LED displays, causing dark scenes to appear as various shades of gray or purple.

The problem of achieving true black color on displays was addressed through the development of OLED screens. OLED, which stands for organic light-emitting diodes, allows each individual pixel to emit light independently of the others. This means that when a pixel needs to display black, it simply turns off its light emission, resulting in a truly black color.

On the other hand, Samsung’s QLED TVs serve as a competitor to LG’s OLED displays. Like OLED screens, QLED displays also emit light from each pixel, but they use "quantum dots" to enhance depth and improve color reproduction. However, unlike OLED screens, QLED screens require backlighting similar to traditional LED panels, as the quantum dots themselves do not emit light.

In the market, there are now two main types of displays: OLED and LED TVs. Only an expert well-versed in the topic will be able to differentiate between QLED and OLED screens.

SUHD, 4K?

One of the current trends in the TV market is the constant rise in resolutions.

Screen resolution refers to the number of pixels that make up the display. Generally, a higher resolution translates to clearer and higher quality images.

The standard resolution for LED TVs is Full HD, which is 1920×1080 pixels. This resolution is sufficient for watching Blu-ray movies and digital channels in HD TV format.

UHD (or SUHD) TVs boast a resolution that is four times higher than that of Full HD models. Typically, flagship models offer 4K resolution. However, Ultra HD TV is still in the development stage and there is currently a lack of suitable content available in the Russian market.

HDR

HDR-capable televisions offer the promise of a more realistic image and more accurate color reproduction. HDR, or high dynamic range, plays a role in the range of colors that can be displayed, from the brightest whites to the darkest blacks. The wider the range, the more vibrant the colors and the more nuanced the shades in both the dark and light areas of the image.

It’s important to note that HDR should not be confused with 4K, as the technology does not increase the number of pixels. However, both HDR and UHD televisions require compatible content. The most common form of media for UHD HDR is Blu-ray discs, which became available at the end of 2016.

Prior to diving into the wonders of contemporary technology, it is valuable to not only establish a predetermined budget but also take into consideration a variety of not always apparent factors.

Dimensions and diagonal size

Among other factors, the diagonal size of a TV determines the optimal distance for viewing. For LED TVs, a coefficient of 1.6 is used. This means that a 40-inch model is best viewed from a distance of 1.62 meters. So, as the diagonal size increases, more space is required and the room should be more spacious.

Now let’s consider the opposite situation: if we know the future position of the TV in the room and the distance to the viewer, how do we choose the right diagonal size? In this case, the screen resolution also comes into play, whether it’s the common FullHD or the higher quality (and more expensive) UHD. For FullHD TVs, the formula to calculate the required diagonal is:

diagonal = distance (in meters) × 25 (coefficient)

So, if we have a viewer at a distance of 2 meters, we calculate 2 × 25 = 50, meaning a 50-inch TV is the recommended size.

Thus, in the case of UHD, the coefficient stands at 39, resulting in an impressive 78 inches when using the same 2 conventional meters!

Size is also a crucial factor: not all companies offer TVs with brackets and stands. There is a significant risk of unintentionally causing damage to the device due to incorrect measurement of the cabinet or wall mount, so it is advisable to determine the dimensions and weight of the TV before making a purchase.

Lesser-known brands are experiencing a surge in popularity, offering 4K televisions at significantly lower prices compared to the industry’s top brands. Therefore, it is wise to carefully consider before purchasing one.

Firstly, a 4K TV necessitates a suitable display and a powerful processor; else, the viewing experience runs the risk of being frustratingly plagued by frequent image freezes and subpar color reproduction.

Secondly, Ultra HD resolution truly shines when viewed on larger screen sizes (starting from 55 inches). Additionally, the farther the viewer is from the screen, the less noticeable the difference between Full HD and Ultra HD becomes. Not many people would be willing to watch an 80-centimeter 55-inch TV, after all.

The curved shape of the screen creates an immersive experience, engaging the peripheral vision and giving the impression of a boundless display.

Similar to the case of 4K resolution, the desired effect is only achieved with a large diagonal size: if the screen is smaller than 50 inches, it is more practical to opt for a regular screen with a narrow bezel or a frameless model.

"Smart TVs" provide the capability to connect to the internet and have a collection of applications that allow for streaming various content from online cinemas and other services. These days, more and more models use Android OS as their platform, which provides the ability to use Google Play.

If you don’t want to pay extra for the Smart TV features, you have the option of purchasing a regular model and making it "smart" by using an external set-top box that runs on Android OS.

It may appear odd, but there was a recent trend among television manufacturers to incorporate 3D display systems in their top-of-the-line and other models. However, this trend quickly faded away due to the lack of sufficient content and the need for additional equipment, such as glasses. Furthermore, even when glasses are provided, they may not be available to everyone. From a consumer perspective, the experiment with 3D display systems can be deemed a failure, leading manufacturers to discontinue this feature. As a result, even the most advanced TVs no longer offer 3D capabilities despite their numerous other advantages.

4th place: TV Philips 50PUS6704

The ideal option in the category of high-quality home televisions is the Philips 50PUS6704, which is available in a 50-inch size. Priced at around 30,000 rubles (at the time of writing this article), it offers a reliable 4K display, two 10-watt speakers, multiple options for connecting external devices, support for a wide range of audio and video formats, and a standout feature is the vibrant and captivating branded Ambilight backlighting, which has received praise from every customer who has purchased it. It is also worth mentioning the newly designed remote control, which has fewer buttons compared to its predecessor, but still includes essential features such as a numerical keypad for teletext. However, it lacks a pointer function and does not come with a built-in microphone for voice control (which is perhaps asking for too much at this price point).

  11. The existence of full-screen format in the television market has been well known for a considerable length of time. However, currently there is a fierce competition for image clarity and dynamics between LED, OLED, and QLED technologies, as elucidated in the theoretical section of the article. It’s important to note that while these models have attained top positions in television ratings, they are also more expensive than others. Therefore, it might be worth considering televisions with a traditional LED panel and excellent craftsmanship, offered by European manufacturers, as well as last year’s models.

Manufacturers have begun expanding the functionality of televisions through the inclusion of Smart-TV capabilities, akin to a computer. If all you require is the ability to playback movies from a hard disk or flash drive, a "smart" TV may not be necessary. Instead, it would be wise to focus on models with exceptional picture quality, excellent audio, the necessary inputs, and 2-3 tuners.

We have compiled a comprehensive list of the top televisions to help you make an informed decision before making a purchase. Our rating includes a wide range of options, categorized by screen size, making it easy for you to find the perfect fit.

Please note that our rating is not meant to definitively determine which TV is the absolute best. With varying preferences and budget constraints, everyone will have their own ideal model. Additionally, prices can vary greatly across different brands.

When it comes to technology, the options may not be as vast. LED and OLED are the most common choices, with OLED being considerably more expensive. While flagship models may not offer any groundbreaking advancements, the inclusion of 4K and HDR features can still be seen as successful marketing strategies rather than essential features. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference and budget considerations.
