Creating a cabinet under the sink from solid wood with your own hands

It is truly commendable to those who do not seek convenience and take the initiative to build their own furniture. Instead of simply purchasing a cabinet for the sink at a store, one can select the desired materials, create a unique design, and custom fit it to the dimensions of the room. This allows for the opportunity to infuse personal style and creativity into the final product. So, rather than delaying the process, let us embark on the journey of creating a true furniture masterpiece!

Immediately, it is crucial to make a significant side note.

Attention! Prior to commencing any work, make sure to purchase the sink!

Although this may seem absurd, it is astonishing how many professionals have made the mistake of not buying the sink beforehand, resulting in the need to reconstruct a multitude of bollards.

So, to begin with, it is imperative to start by taking measurements:

  • the available space surrounding the sink;
  • the sink’s dimensions;
  • the elevation of its placement;
  • the plumbing connections, specifically: the length of the pipe section, their diameter, and the gap between the wall and the end of the pipes.

Understood? Moving on. Based on my experience, it is recommended to start with standard sizes and then make adjustments according to your own measurements (and personal preference, of course):

  • height of 82 cm;
  • 43 cm is the depth;
  • the width is 58 cm.

Here is an example of what the drawing could look like:

Now, let’s gather all the necessary tools for creating the dream bollard. These include:

  • hammer;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw;
  • hacksaw;
  • pliers;
  • screwdrivers;
  • sandpaper;
  • something to measure with, a tape measure will work;
  • paper and pencil;
  • a sander.

Do you have everything? If not, you can quickly go to the store and get what you need.

Note: If you plan to use additional materials, you’ll need the appropriate tools for them as well.

Are you ready? Let’s begin the ceremony.

Making and assembling a bollard made of solid wood

Each of these contains a frame base, a top, side parts, and supplementary components – doors, shelves, drawers, canopies, etc. Some of them may even include a bottom and legs. As for the frame, you can use bars made of any type of wood you prefer. The top can be made from various materials like plastic, drywall, glass, or wood. Ordinary plywood will suffice for the sides and bottom. The additional elements can be crafted from any materials of your choosing.

All the patterns are initially outlined on paper and then transferred onto the designated surface, where they are cut out using a jigsaw.

Important! When constructing a cabinet with doors, it is often overlooked that there is a small top part above them. Although it serves no other purpose than being decorative, without it, the end result would appear unsightly, with a noticeable gap. Avoid making this oversight.

The process of assembling begins with the frame base. Once all the parts have been sanded with sandpaper and, if necessary, coated with special moisture-resistant substances.

The side walls are then fastened to the frame using self-tapping screws and glue. To add extra strength, I highly recommend reinforcing the connections with steel or aluminum corners.

Next is the upper surface. Even if you have double-checked everything before, place the sink in the hole to ensure that all the dimensions are perfectly adjusted. You don’t need to attach it just yet – we will do that later. Right now, we just want to make sure it fits.

Finally, we move on to the bottom. Some people prefer to fix it last, but it is more convenient when the cabinet is lying on its side. This way, slamming doors and drawers won’t get in the way. So, I save attaching them for the end.

Installing the cabinet under the sink with your own hands

Having completed all the necessary preparations, our beautiful sink is now ready to be connected. It is crucial to ensure that the entire sink is fully assembled at this stage, including the taps, handles, and water spigots.

Next, the cabinet should be carefully positioned in its designated spot, ready to serve us faithfully for a long time. If you have opted for a wall-mounted model, it is now time to securely attach it to the wall. Keep in mind that the fasteners must be strong enough to support not only the weight of the cabinet, but also the sink itself.

Silicone or sealant should be applied around the entire perimeter of the sink before installation in the hole. It is important not to skimp on this step. If you apply too much, any excess can easily be removed. However, if you don’t use enough, you will have to start over and redo the process.

Keep in mind that there are also models available that are attached from inside the cabinet using a special fastening system, eliminating any protruding elements on the surface. However, it is recommended to seek the assistance of a professional for the installation of these models, as there is a high risk of making mistakes.

Once the sink is installed, the next step is to connect it to the water supply. If desired, you can also add decorative elements to the cabinet such as carved patterns, painting, gilding, etc. This is the perfect time to get creative. Additionally, you can choose to decorate the sink with tiles or self-adhesive tape.
