Making homemade brakes on a motoblock trailer is a topic that Motor Sich has covered in their photo and video tutorials.
In case you’re wondering how to make brakes on a trailer that is attached to a Motor Sich motoblock, Motor Sich has also provided a helpful photo and video guide.
For those who prefer a hands-on approach, Motor Sich has shared a step-by-step photo and video tutorial on how to create brakes for a motoblock trailer.
If you hold the belief that brakes on a motoblock trailer are unnecessary and only for the faint-hearted, then this article will not be of use to you.
A trailer for a motoblock is an essential accessory that complements the functionality of the motoblock.
While there are numerous professionally manufactured trailers available for motoblocks, many of them equipped with brakes, this article aims to assist motoblock owners who have homemade trailers.
However, this article is likely to attract the attention of owners of motorized blocks who have factory trailers for their motorized blocks. This is because many owners of such trailers complain about the insufficient effectiveness of the brakes on their motorized block trailers, or that they are only effective when moving forward, and so on.
There are various braking mechanisms that can be installed on a homemade trailer for a motoblock. The choice of mechanism depends on the availability of the necessary parts.
For example, in my case, I have a homemade trailer for my Motor Sich motoblock that I made myself. To avoid the need for inventing something new, I installed an assembly beam from a front-wheel drive car, specifically the beam from a VW Golf III, and added a handbrake mechanism.
However, many individuals who construct their own homemade trailer for their motoblock often exceed their capabilities by installing car axles, trunnions, and hubs that are either already available or can be obtained inexpensively from scrap yards or borrowed from friends.
Naturally, at that stage, many individuals do not even consider the need for brakes, but eventually they start contemplating how to bring the loaded trailer to a stop if necessary.
Various braking mechanisms can be installed on homemade trailers for motoblocks, such as restoring hydraulic brakes, connecting to a handbrake, implementing a system of pulleys, or creating a locomotive brake, among other options.
This article aims to demonstrate how to build homemade brakes for a trailer to a motoblock, using my friend’s motoblock as an example.
Therefore, the trailer’s axle is constructed using a pipe, inside of which are inserted affordable and common b/a front trunnions with hubs sourced from the classic VAZ. The hubs are equipped with b/a rear brake drums, also sourced from the same classic VAZ, with matching dimensions.
The decision to use brake drums from the VAZ 2101-07 was intentional, as they have the largest diameter among the entire VAZ family, which positively contributes to improved braking force and effectiveness.
Additionally, two used brake pads from the VAZ 2101-07 were utilized, resulting in minimal cost for all the parts and assemblies, as they are commonly found in people’s garages or among acquaintances, often left unused.
Following this, a system of rods and levers was employed to mount the brake pads onto the homemade trailer, securely attaching them to the motoblock.
The brake drums were equipped with brake pads, which were then pressed against them using a cross link. The cross link was then welded to the brake pads. The main link, which was connected to the brake pedal on the drawbar of the trailer, was welded to the cross link in the center.
Additionally, two spacer rods were welded to the center and cross brake rod.
Above and below the cross link brake, guides were welded to ensure that the brake shoes remained in their working position and did not spin with the brake drum during braking.

Trailer braking system
Before learning how to create brakes for a motoblock, it is important to familiarize oneself with these components in more detail. These components are essential for any motoblock with a trailer as they allow for quick stopping of the moving unit, even with a heavy load.
This ensures safer transportation, which is particularly crucial when traversing uneven terrain with numerous slopes. It is strongly recommended to utilize pre-made parts from various automotive and motorcycle equipment when constructing such components, as this will greatly simplify the task.
Additionally, brake systems come in various types, and not all are suitable for integration into a motorcycle’s design.

The easiest and most efficient choice for creating homemade brakes is using parts from an old motorcycle. These spare parts are readily available and affordable, making it cost-effective to make brakes for a motoblock.
Alternatively, one can opt to use a car parking brake, which provides the ability to easily stop on slopes for extended periods of time. However, the process of dismantling and installing this type of brake is more complex and costly, making it a less popular option.
The functionality of the system is highly straightforward, as it mirrors that of conventional analogs employed in other kinds of equipment. To engage the brakes, one simply needs to manipulate the lever, causing the cable to be tightened, and to resume movement, the lever must be turned back to its original position.
Hitching device for motoblock
A durable power tiller trailer is essential for farm use. The frame supports the main load and serves as the foundation for the structure. The trailer also withstands significant loads. The longevity of the trailer depends on the quality of the construction materials and the attachment method.
You have the option to purchase a pre-made trailer attachment for the motoblock or create your own. Drawings and dimensions can be easily found online. Here is a photo of one example:

There are various ways to construct the coupling mechanism, for instance, using a cardan, a cross, or a P-shaped component. Many consider the latter choice to be highly dependable. The coupling device ought to be crafted from stainless steel.
Modification
Before commencing work, it is imperative to carry out preliminary procedures on the pre-manufactured materials. In order to accomplish this, the cables and rods should be detached from the disks, followed by the grinding of the disks. The process of installing brakes of this nature onto the trailer is relatively straightforward – it involves placing the finely milled drums onto the hubs and firmly securing them at the rear end. By doing so, a vacant space will be created between the ribs of the drum. This space should be closed off by encircling the ribs with a sturdy metal wire. Subsequently, the disk is affixed onto the axle and secured with the aid of bushings. It is essential to take precautions to prevent any form of displacement of the disk in any direction. This necessitates welding a piece of metal (such as an angle or a pipe) onto the axle, using a welding machine.
Firstly, the cables are attached to the drums and then pulled towards the control point. To implement the control system, it is necessary to utilize a lever along with a gear. The control mechanism of the vehicle’s parking brake, complete with a lever, would be suitable for this purpose. However, it is also possible to construct the control system using materials readily available.
It is crucial to ensure that a trailer brake control valve equipped with a two-wire actuator is installed alongside the control lever. By employing this ingenious method, one can create a trailer with functional brakes.
Trailer for motoblock: types of trailers and recommendations for making with your own hands
Expanding the functional capabilities of a popular motoblock can be accomplished by using a trailer. However, not all homestead owners can afford to purchase a ready-made trailer. In this situation, one option to consider is building a trailer from scratch.
Trailers come in different load capacities, which is one of the criteria used for classification. For most home situations, high load capacity is not necessary. Additionally, trailers for motoblocks can be divided into different groups based on their design:
- One-piece trailers have a simple design where the bottom and walls are fixed together.
- Excellent for transportation of large-sized cargoes, the trailer with hinged sides is highly versatile.
- Dumpers are extremely convenient for unloading operations and can significantly increase productivity.
When planning to purchase a trailer or build a cart for a motoblock, it is important to consider certain design features.
If dealing with a one-piece trailer, the process is quite straightforward; however, for other types, additional steps are required.
Special attention should be given to the following factors:
- For two-axle dumping devices with a high payload capacity, it is recommended to equip them with a hydraulic drive to facilitate the work process.
- Single-axle models typically rely on a manual device for tipping, which is sufficient due to the special center of gravity placement.
- Trailers that have a weight capacity exceeding 350 kg are fitted with a mechanical braking mechanism.
Making a trailer with your own hands
When creating a homemade trailer for a motoblock, the simplest options are often chosen after considering all the design possibilities. While making a dump device may be more challenging, its functionality is significantly higher.
The process of building a trailer device for a motoblock begins with creating a drawing. This allows you to determine the necessary materials and envision complex elements, for which more detailed schematics may be required.
It is important to keep in mind that the center of gravity of a well-balanced trailer should be positioned closer to the front, but still within the wheel axle level.
Frame assembly
The durability and strength of the trailer will determine the reliability of its frame. It is important to consider this when designing the trailer. To manufacture the trailer frame, the following materials can be utilized:
- Rectangular cross-section angle and pipe
- Front and rear cross members can be constructed from a 25×25 mm angle
- For the spars, a great option is a 60×30 mm pipe
- To connect all the elements, it is necessary to create five additional crossbars to form a lattice-frame
- Four vertical posts are attached to the corners of this lattice to connect the longitudinal tubes
The production of a one-piece trailer is a relatively straightforward process. Some individuals who own plots of land decide to create more intricate contraptions. In such a scenario, all subsequent actions are contingent upon selecting a specific kind of trailer:
- The back wall of the dump trailer needs to be attached with hinges.
- If the trailer is to be constructed with collapsible sides, all three sides, except the front one, must follow this design.
- The frames of the hinged components should be fabricated separately from the overall frame. In simpler models, they can be shared elements.
Cladding of the frame
This is one of the easiest stages in creating a trailer device. However, there are some important details that need to be considered. When it comes to cladding the frame, it’s important to choose materials that won’t increase the cost of the device:
- Wood is the most affordable option, although not the most practical due to its low moisture resistance. To make the boards last longer, it’s necessary to treat them with special coatings and constantly check their integrity.
- Plastic – doesn’t have the main disadvantage of wood, but it is vulnerable to mechanical damage.
- Metal sheets – need to be treated with anticorrosive coatings and are the most durable, but also the most expensive material.
Start by fully covering the flooring of the trailer before moving on to the task of addressing the sidewalls.
Photos and descriptions of interesting variants
There have already been several unique trailer variations created by self-builders. Here is an example of one you might come across.
One option is a small tipping trailer with compact wheels, a simple frame design, and no brakes. Constructing this type of trailer is not difficult – all you need to do is provide pivot loops and a method to secure the body during movement.
Another possibility is a two-axle version. This type of cart is suitable for transporting heavy and bulky cargo when paired with a powerful power tiller. It will require a swivel mechanism for the front axle and it wouldn’t hurt to have a brake system as well.
discover what type of oil to use in a Viking Motoblok.
Using a section of the construction from a heavy motorcycle is a highly practical approach. This design includes a soft suspension system consisting of springs and shock absorbers. The motorcycle wheels are lightweight and perfectly matched to support the load. Furthermore, the inclusion of a luxurious car seat significantly enhances the comfort while traveling.
Upon seeing the spacious bench, it’s hard not to exclaim, "Petrusha, take us on a tractor ride!" In the event that two individuals will be using the motoblock, it is crucial to have a suitable seat available.
If the purpose is to transport hay, it is important to have high sides. To achieve this, it is necessary to have nests along the perimeter of the sides.
This cart for a power tiller is more akin to a dump truck in appearance. Nonetheless, the inclusion of a powerful water-cooled engine enables the transportation of a significant amount of earth.
This humble-looking variation appears to be the most practical option. The position of the loading platform is positioned low, making it easier to load and increasing the stability of the trailer while in motion. With a suspension system consisting of springs and shock absorbers, as well as a car seat, the driver of the motorized vehicle can expect comfort. In general, if not a "Mercedes", it will certainly be a cool bicycle.
Perhaps, this vehicle is not even a "Zaporozhets"?! The latter has a trunk, at least in the front, but here, where does one store the cargo? The owner will have to sit on a mound of sand…..
Making a trailer with your own hands
When constructing a DIY trailer for a motoblock, it is common to opt for the simplest design options after considering all the possibilities. While a dump feature may be more challenging to create, it significantly enhances the trailer’s functionality.
The process of building a homemade trailer for a motoblock starts with creating a drawing. This allows for determining the necessary materials and identifying complex components that require more precise schematics.
It is important to keep in mind that the center of gravity of a well-balanced trailer should be closer to the front side, without exceeding the level of the wheel axle.
Frame assembly
The durability and strength of the trailer will determine the reliability of its frame. This is an important factor to consider when designing the trailer. In order to create a sturdy frame, various materials can be used. These include:
- Rectangular angle and pipe
- Front and rear cross members made from 25×25 mm angle
- Spars made from 60×30 mm pipe
- Five additional crossbars to connect all the elements and form a lattice frame
- Four vertical posts attached to the corners of the lattice’s longitudinal tubes
Manufacturing a one-piece trailer is a relatively straightforward process. However, some individuals who own homestead plots opt to create more intricate devices. In such cases, the subsequent steps depend on the chosen type of trailer:
- In the case of a tipper trailer, the rear wall must have a hinge.
- If the trailer is intended to have folding sides, all three sides (excluding the front) must be designed in this manner.
- The frames of the hinged elements should be constructed separately from the overall frame. In the case of simpler models, they can be incorporated as common elements of the frame.
Cladding of the frame
This is one of the easiest steps in creating a trailer device. However, there are some details that need to be considered. When choosing materials for cladding the frame, it is important to select ones that won’t increase the cost of the trailer device:
- Wood is an affordable material, but not the most practical due to its low resistance to moisture. To ensure the boards last as long as possible, they must be treated with special solutions and the integrity of the coating should be monitored regularly.
- Plastic does not have the main drawback of wood, but it is also susceptible to mechanical damage.
- Metal sheets should be treated with anti-corrosion solutions beforehand and are the most durable, but they are also quite expensive.
In order to start, you must first address the trailer’s floor, and then move on to its sides.
Undercarriage
The design can include a component taken from an old vehicle, such as a garden wheelbarrow. To attach it, an additional pipe will be needed. The hub can be pressed onto the wheel, while the back part can be drilled and mounted onto the axle.
Ensuring that there are no misalignments is crucial.
Pins are the optimal choice for mounting the wheels.
Once the hitch is created, it’s time to make the connection. This is a separate element that holds great importance. The easiest method for connecting the motoblock to the trailer is the "pipe in a pipe" assembly. A shorter piece of pipe is attached to one end of a pre-bent pipe in a vertical position.
On the opposite side of the primary component (curved tube), a second component is welded, and the kingpin needs to be attached to it to serve as a connecting element. This robust structure is simple to produce and known for its exceptional dependability.
Adapter for engine blocks
Typically, the adapter consists of two couplings – one for attaching additional equipment, and the other for connecting it to the motoblock. For instance, you can use the adapter to connect the following additional elements:
- a seeder;
- a plow;
- tillers;
- a harrow and other accessories.
The wheelset and axle in the adapter are sturdy structures that allow the power tiller to operate even in challenging terrains and transport heavy loads.
It’s important to note that using such a machine to transport goods on public roads is forbidden, which is why they are only used in rural areas. However, despite their structural similarities, all adapters have significant differences.
For instance, there exist adapters for rear steering, adapters for four-wheel drive, and adapters for front units.
Practical recommendations
If the power of the device is less than 5 hp, the ideal trailer dimensions in terms of length and width will be 1.5 and 1 m respectively. To calculate the body dimensions, cut pieces of profiled pipe to the necessary length and weld them together to form the frame. The resulting structure is sufficiently sturdy, eliminating the need for reinforcement in the corners. To achieve a smooth and high-quality seam along the entire length, it is advisable to perform the welding work on a flat surface, preferably using electric arc welding.
Body assembly and painting
The sides of the trailer are constructed using a 25-30 mm profile. Sheet metal is utilized in the construction of the siding, which is then securely attached to the profiled tube using threaded connections. The material used for the trailer body must be free from any rust. In the event of corrosion, it is to be removed using mechanical means, and then the surface should be coated with a rust converter primer. The body should be tried on to the frame, ensuring that all dimensions match up, before proceeding with a test assembly. After the test assembly, the body should be disassembled and set aside, while the frame is coated with oil-based paint. It is crucial that there are no areas left unpainted.

The body deck is painted and then installed. Fasteners are used to secure the joints, and the protruding bolts are painted to protect against corrosion. Any areas where the paint dried incorrectly during installation are also touched up. The drawbar is made from the thickest pipe available.
Steering mechanism
Because the design incorporates a cart that can tilt, specialized axles are created in the center at the bottom. To ensure that the tilting mechanism does not become stuck when lifting, proper alignment must be maintained. Reinforcing bushings are secured using a 5-6 mm thick plate. Similar components are welded to the hitch, which serves as the foundational frame. Constructing the hinge joint with one’s own hands requires meticulous precision. A stainless steel circle with a 5 cm diameter serves as the foundation. The studs are also milled from hardened steel. Since the joint will have low movement intensity, it is possible to forgo the use of bearings; regular lubrication of the mechanism is the most important factor.
Once all preparations have been completed, a trial run is conducted to ensure that there are no issues with driving, turning, starting, stopping, and other operations. If the equipment, including the trailer, performs well in all modes, then the construction is deemed ready for use. If the motoblock has enough power, the cart can be loaded with a weight ranging from 300 to 700 kg. Building a homemade trailer is significantly more cost-effective compared to purchasing a factory-made one, and it can last for many decades. The key is to use high-quality materials, adhere to the proper dimensions, and assemble everything accurately.
Device and principle of operation
Actually, the adapter is presented as a cart that is connected to the motoblock. This results in the creation of a mini-tractor. The key components of this unit include:
- a frame that other constituent elements are attached to;
- a driver’s seat with a lifting lever;
- 2 wheels;
- a clutch device;
- a wheel axle.
Here is a video that showcases the disassembly of the front adapter:
Frame
Being made of high-quality and long-lasting materials, it is crucial to emphasize that this component holds significant importance within the device since it serves as the central hub connecting various other elements.
Wheels
There are two variations of wheels available – metal and rubber. Metal wheels are intended for heavy-duty work in the field, while rubber wheels are specifically designed for driving on dirt roads.
Coupling device
The hitch is the component responsible for the connection between the attachment and the mechanical unit. Considered one of the essential parts, this attachment is typically constructed using durable materials such as high-strength metals like steel or cast iron.
The dimensions of this device are approximately 2 meters in length and 80 centimeters in width.
Depending on the type of clutch, there are different variations of this design:
- With a movable clutch, which is the lightest option. In this case, the clutch is located in the front of the device, but it requires more difficult maneuvering since the entire power unit needs to be turned.
- With steering, where the clutch is rigid and steering is controlled by a mechanical steering unit. This type of steering is easier to use, but manufacturing it is more difficult.
There are also different adapters available for power tillers of different capacities. Machines with low power require a short attachment, while powerful machines require a long attachment.
Functions

The power tiller has gained immense popularity for a variety of reasons. Gardeners previously relied on manual models, but with the introduction of power tillers and attachments, working in the vegetable garden has become much more convenient. Less physical effort is required, leading to an increase in productivity.
- Thinning plantings;
- Perching;
- Weeding;
- Leveling the ground;
- Deep loosening;
- Preparing beds for planting;
- Oxygenating the soil;
- Breaking the crust after rain;
- Filling holes;
- Inter-row cultivation.
The power tiller is designed to avoid overturning the soil in order to preserve its essential nutrients and moisture as much as possible.
However, one drawback that many gardeners have noted is the need for models of different sizes, as each crop requires a specific width between rows.
It’s possible to conveniently purchase a pre-made, branded plane cutter for the motoblock. However, there’s also the option of DIYing one, and the end result will be just as good.

For numerous agriculturists, acquiring a power tiller becomes an essential requirement for farming. To enhance the capabilities of this appliance, they also opt to purchase a trailer. This additional equipment significantly streamlines and expedites the tasks for the owner. The cart becomes indispensable for clearing the site, eliminating diverse types of waste, or simply transporting goods.

Regrettably, urban roads do not permit the utilization of this particular mode of transportation. Consequently, when purchasing a trailer, it is imperative to keep in mind this particular detail.

Nevertheless, purchasing a pre-made design may not always be the most favorable choice. This piece will outline the advantages and disadvantages of an original creation.

Types of self-made trailers
The concept of one-piece designs involves having a compact structure made of boards, enabling the transportation of cargo in bulk or as a single solid entity. The unloading process is facilitated through the presence of a rear side that can be opened on a hinge.
Trailers with hinged edges are specifically designed for the transport of oversized cargoes. These trailers have a sturdy foundation and walls that can be hinged or removed as needed.
Dump trailers are ideal for swift and effortless unloading of cargo, as they can tip the body to quickly dispose of the contents.
Ready-made or homemade?
There is a wide range of motorized cultivator carts available on the market today, each with their own unique features, advantages, and disadvantages. Online, you can view photos of these trailers and then search for a suitable option that catches your eye.
If you purchase a cart directly from the manufacturer, you won’t need to put in any effort to assemble or find components. However, it will come at a significant cost. This is why some people consider the option of building their own trailer.
A DIY cart can be customized to fit your specific needs, and it will be much more cost-effective than buying one from a store. Ultimately, the final decision is up to the owner.
Components
The design of the trailer for a motoblock is quite extensive, encompassing various components such as the body, wheels, brakes, fenders, seats, and drawbars.
In order to ensure the trailer can handle the required load, a sturdy metal is used for the body. For convenience, the sides of the body can be designed to be hinged.
For wheels, it is common to use automobile or motorcycle wheels, as long as they are suitable for the task and able to handle the necessary load. Farmers often prioritize wide wheels, as they improve the vehicle’s ability to navigate different terrains.
The fenders are typically made of plastic and serve to protect against debris and dirt kicked up by the wheels.
The drawbar is a metal attachment that directly connects the trailer to the motoblock.
In practice, it has been found that motorcycle brakes are the most effective for the motoblock.
Assembly rules
- The trailer is constructed based on the provided drawings and diagrams, ensuring that all dimensions are clearly defined to avoid any confusion.
- Prior to assembly, it is crucial to determine the specific type of cart that will be built and gather all the necessary materials and tools.
- The size and weight of the trailer should be carefully chosen to match the power of the motoblock, as an overly large and heavy trailer may exceed its capabilities.
- The construction process of the cart always commences with the frame, as it bears the primary load.
Exterior style, cladding
In order to make the trailer look presentable, farmers utilize a range of different materials.
If the option of using wood is being considered, it is important to take into account its impracticality due to its susceptibility to moisture. If boards are chosen, they should be treated with a special solution and closely monitored for any signs of damage.
Plastic is an inexpensive material. While it is not prone to moisture damage, it lacks strength.
There is a high demand for trailers for self-made motoblocks due to their low manufacturing cost. However, not everyone is capable of this task. Ultimately, the decision to purchase a ready-made version or assemble one’s own is up to the owner. In any case, this tool is essential for farm improvement.
Types of designs

There are three main categories of options to choose from, each with its own unique characteristics. The selection should be based on the specific work being performed and the design of the motoblock, as some models may only be compatible with one option. It is also possible to mix and match different options for various projects. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preferences and skills.
- Rear adapter. This is the simplest solution, which attaches to the motoblock through the hitch. A tooling can be placed on it. Another module is added at the back to hang and attach equipment. It is controlled using a standard handle, although sharp turns can be challenging and require significant effort. This type of option is the easiest to assemble.
- Front version. The layout is configured in such a way that the engine is positioned at the rear, while attachments can be installed on a standard hitch. This particular configuration requires more effort to assemble as it involves designing and fabricating front axle steering or implementing a flexible joint between the two parts. However, it offers the benefit of more convenient steering using a conventional steering wheel, although all controls will need to be relocated.
- All-wheel drive configuration. This design stands out due to its ability to transmit torque to both axles simultaneously, enhancing off-road capabilities and increasing power for heavy-duty tasks. The second axle is driven by a power take-off shaft, which is connected to a small universal joint, while the frame is significantly stronger and more rigid. Creating such a variant is the most challenging endeavor.
